Understanding Challenging Behaviour: Looking Beyond the Behaviour
When we hear the phrase challenging behaviour, it's easy to focus on what we can see. A child who lashes out, refuses to engage, becomes withdrawn, or struggles to cope may be described as "challenging." But behaviour is rarely the problem itself. More often, it is a form of communication.
At Mental Care Therapies, we believe that understanding "why" behaviour happens is the first step towards meaningful support.
Behaviour Has a Purpose
Every behaviour serves a function. It may be a response to anxiety, sensory overload, frustration, communication difficulties, trauma, or unmet needs. For autistic individuals and people with ADHD, behaviour can also reflect differences in how the brain processes information, emotions, and the environment.
Rather than asking, "How do we stop this behaviour?" it is often more helpful to ask:
What is this person trying to communicate?
What happened before the behaviour?
What need is not being met?
What support might help them feel safe and regulated?
This shift in thinking can make a significant difference for children, young people, adults, families, and schools.
Moving Away from Blame
Behaviour is not about someone being "difficult" or "attention seeking." Many people experiencing emotional distress simply do not yet have the skills, language, or capacity to express what they need in another way.
A neurodiversity-affirming and trauma-informed approach recognises that behaviour often reflects stress rather than defiance. By understanding the whole person, we can respond with curiosity instead of judgement.
How Psychological Formulation Can Help
Sometimes behaviour feels confusing or unpredictable. This is where psychological formulation can be particularly valuable.
A formulation brings together information about a person's experiences, emotions, environment, strengths, and neurodevelopmental profile to build a clearer picture of what may be contributing to their difficulties. It can be especially helpful for people who are:
Waiting for an autism or ADHD assessment.
Recently diagnosed and trying to understand themselves.
Experiencing behavioural or emotional difficulties at home or in school.
Looking for practical strategies that support emotional regulation.
Rather than focusing solely on symptoms or labels, formulation helps identify patterns and guides supportive, personalised interventions.
Supporting Positive Change
Whether through therapy, consultation with schools, or psychological formulation, our goal is to help people feel understood. When we understand the reasons behind behaviour, we are better able to build emotional regulation, strengthen relationships, and improve wellbeing.
If you're a parent, school, or adult looking to better understand challenging behaviour, we offer specialist support across Colne, Burnley, Pendle, and surrounding areas, as well as online across the UK.
Understanding behaviour starts with understanding the person behind it.
